An exciting event of the Fall will take place at the Arch Street Meeting House on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Under the auspices of the Standing Committee on Peace & Concerns which will be celebrating the 350th anniversary of the 1660 Statement, “We utterly deny . . .” with many other programs in the fall of 2010. This one day lecture and 15 breakout groups is scheduled for the third Saturday in October. It is hoped that Friends and acquaintances not only of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting but the other three yearly meetings and faculty from Friends schools on the North-East corridor will be able to participate.
The day’s program is entitled “How to Speak to the Other”- that person whose understandings are in direct apposition to our own. There will be a morning lecturer, time for questions, lunch and an afternoon time for attenders to attend two of many break-out groups addressing a variety of areas. These will range from helping our children as parents, teachers in both Quaker and public schools, and adults in their personal and professional lives. Our speaker will be Sallie B. King, Valley Meeting (BYM), Buddhist Quaker, Professor of Religion at James Madison University, author of five books on Buddhism, BYM?s 1st Day School Curriculum How to Speak to the Christian Fundamentalist and FGC’s Friends and Other Faiths. The Cynic
What is a rainbow?
A vain show of gaudy beauty,
Wrought from separateness and division of light,
Flight from reason and the glaring white.
A miracle you say, a sign from a God that separates,
Time and time again, colors, sexes, peoples?
Optical conclusions that engender false hope
And promises of riches to be squandered,
Go ahead-Shine, time and time again!
Don’t expect anyone to be impressed
By a so- called miracle of your moment in space time.
I won’t be.
